All Degrees are worth nothing, but some are actually worth less than others

disclaimer:

The above was written by a bitter ex-DILS student. That's LIBRARIAN to you and I. A wannabe compsci, the DILS student spends most of his time trying to ignore the fact that libraries are rapidly becoming obsolete.

Unfortunately degrees are non-refundable. What a shame that I spent 3 years studying the thoughts and ideas of the greatest writers and thinkers in English and acquiring 'knowledge' and reading that rarest of commodities 'the book' when I could have spent my time smoking weed, surfing the net and buying stuff. As for going to university in order to get a good job I am not so materialistic, indeed, I have no desire to exploit people or to earn an unnecessary amount of money simply in order to buy 'stuff'. Whatever happened to education for education's sake? The quest for knowledge and self-improvement unfortunately seems to be only worthwhile when the said knowledge has a 'use value'; that is, when the knowledge acquired is seen as a commodity and furthermore as something which may(conditional) help us get our 'foot in the door' of the increasingly nondescript and homogenised 'Company' whose only raison d'etre is the generation of more money with little concern for morality or for the rights of the common man. Am I supposed to spend 3 years studying a subject in order to suit the needs of such companies or do I have independent interests which I would like to pursue regardless of their use value within a capitalist society? I would like to believe that there is knowledge which exists above and beyond the knowledge we are told is 'useful'. Moriarty
