When Peter Tyers saw my statistics he kindly refered me to this quote.

"A single death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic."
-- Joseph Stalin

In some sense Stalin is correct, but I have to disagree and say that a million deaths is not only a statistic but also a million tragedies.

War Name Start Date End Date Length (years) Total US Killed Total Civilians Killed US Death Rate (deaths/year) Civilian Death Rate (deaths/year)
Vietnam War 1964 1975 11 58,226 4,000,000 5,293.27 363,363.36
Gulf War 2 Mar-2003 Present 1.58 1,363 14,453 860.84 9,128.21

Notes:

  1. US involvement in Vietnam began in 1950 escalating until 1964. For more information see Wikipedia's page on the Vietnam war
  2. Statistics for ongoing conflicts may be out of date.
  3. Civilians killed statistics are estimates and in the case of the Iraq War estimates the lower bound has been used.
